Order the tonnage the plant asks for
Asphalt is sold by the ton, and the plant needs a number before the truck rolls. This turns your area and thickness into tons using a typical hot-mix density, so you are not doing the conversion in your head at the scale house.
Thickness drives the tonnage, so double check it before you order. A residential driveway is usually 2 to 3 inches of surface over a compacted stone base. A parking lot, a shared drive, or anything carrying trucks wants more, often in two lifts.
The density of hot-mix runs around 145 pounds per cubic foot, but it moves a little with the mix and how tightly it is rolled, so treat the tons as a close estimate and confirm with your supplier.
The base is a separate order. Figure the crushed stone under the asphalt with the gravel calculator, and add a little to every order for the edges and the waste that comes with paving.
