Counts include your waste allowance and are rounded up. A standard modular brick runs about 6.9 per square foot of wall with a 3/8 inch mortar joint; a standard 8 by 8 by 16 block is about 1.125 per square foot. Mortar is an estimate that swings with joint size and the mason, so buy a little extra. Subtract large openings from the wall area for a big job.

Count the wall, not the guesswork

Masonry runs on count. A standard modular brick covers about 6.9 square feet of wall per, with a 3/8 inch mortar joint; a standard 8 by 8 by 16 block is about 1.125 per square foot. Pick the unit, enter the wall, and the calculator gives you the count with waste already added.

Mortar is the part people shortchange. It swings with the joint size and the mason's hand, so the bags here are an estimate to get you close, not a promise. Buy a little extra rather than stopping the pour to run for more.

Waste matters more than it looks on masonry. Cuts at corners and openings, plus breakage in the pile, add up fast, so ten percent is a fair starting point and a cut-up wall earns more.

For a big wall with windows and doors, subtract the large openings from the area before you order so you are not paying for brick you will never lay.
