A starting number for what you built
Most owners have no idea what their business is worth until they think about selling. This gives you a rough number now, so it is not a mystery later.
Small contracting businesses usually sell on a multiple of owner earnings, often called SDE, which is the profit plus the salary and perks the owner takes. Enter that number, pick a multiple, and add your saleable equipment while subtracting the debt a buyer would have to clear.
The multiple is where judgment comes in. Trades tend to land somewhere around two to three times earnings. It goes up when the revenue is recurring and the work runs without the owner in the truck every day, and down when the business really is just the owner and a phone.
Treat the result as a ballpark, not an appraisal. A broker or valuation pro gives a defensible number for a real sale, and clean books make that number higher. The tidier your estimates, billing, and job costs, the easier the business is to value and to sell.
Business Valuation Calculator questions
How is a contracting business valued?
Usually a multiple of owner earnings (SDE), plus saleable equipment, minus debt. This calculator does that math from your inputs.
What multiple should I use?
Trades often fall near 2 to 3 times earnings. Recurring revenue and a business that runs without the owner push it higher; heavy owner dependence pulls it lower.
What is SDE?
Seller's discretionary earnings: the profit plus the owner's salary and personal perks. It shows what the business really earns for one working owner.
Is this really free?
Yes. No email, no signup, and nothing you type leaves your browser.
