Carpet is bought by the yard
Carpet is sold by the square yard, and there are 9 square feet in a yard. The calculator converts your room for you and adds a waste allowance for cuts and seams.
Under the carpet you need two things people forget. Pad at the full room size, and tack strip around the perimeter to hold the carpet tight at the walls.
Seams are the part to plan. Carpet comes in 12 foot widths, so a wider room needs a seam. Keep that seam out of doorways and the main traffic path, and run the pile in one direction so the room does not look two-toned.

How many square yards of carpet do I need?
Take the room square footage, add waste, and divide by 9. The calculator does it and shows the yards.
Do I need new pad?
Almost always. Good pad makes cheap carpet feel better and last longer, and it is cheap next to the carpet. Order it at the room size.
How much tack strip?
Enough to go around the room perimeter, minus the doorways. The calculator estimates it from your room size.
