Get the post layout right
The posts carry the whole fence, so start there. Space them 6 to 8 feet apart, and go closer for tall privacy panels that catch the wind.
Set each post about a third of its height in the ground, and below the frost line if you get one, or the first hard winter heaves them. Two bags of concrete per post is a common figure, more for tall or gate posts.
Rails and pickets follow the layout. Use three rails on a 6 foot fence and two on a 4 foot. A privacy fence runs the pickets tight with no gap. A picket or spaced fence uses whatever gap you set, and the calculator counts the pickets for it.
