A floating floor needs underlayment
Laminate and vinyl plank float over the subfloor, so they need an underlayment under them unless the plank already has it attached. The calculator sizes it at the room area and figures the rolls.
Order the square feet shown, not just the room size. Every row leaves an off-cut, so an 8 percent waste allowance keeps you from running short. Bump it up for a diagonal lay.
Two things people skip. Leave a quarter-inch expansion gap at every wall so the floor can move without buckling. And plan a transition strip at each doorway and where the floor meets a different surface.

How many boxes of laminate do I need?
Take the room area, add waste, and divide by the coverage on the box. The calculator does it and rounds up.
Do I need underlayment?
Yes, unless the plank has it attached. It cushions, quiets, and helps with small subfloor imperfections. Order it at the room size.
How much expansion gap?
About a quarter inch at every wall. A floating floor expands and contracts, and pinning it at the edges is what makes it buckle.
