Yards for big beds, bags for small
A yard of mulch is cheaper than the same amount in bags, but hauling a yard in a sedan is a bad afternoon. The calculator gives you both so you can decide.
Depth is what people get wrong. Two to three inches of mulch holds moisture and blocks weeds. Pile it deeper and you smother the roots and waste money. New planting beds of soil want more, four to six inches.
One yard covers about 108 square feet at three inches, and a standard bag holds two cubic feet. Order a touch extra for the edges and the spots you missed, and top up beds each spring rather than starting from scratch.
