Cover the lawn without a second trip
Sod and seed are two different jobs, so the calculator does both. Switch to sod and it returns rolls and pallets from your area. Switch to seed and it returns pounds by grass type.
Sod is measured simply. A standard roll covers about 10 square feet and a pallet holds enough for roughly 450, so a big yard is quicker to buy by the pallet. Add a little waste for odd corners and to swap out any dried edges, and get it down within a day of delivery.
Seed depends on the blend. Tall fescue and ryegrass go down heavier than bluegrass or bermuda, so the calculator sets the rate from the grass you pick. The rates are for a new lawn, and overseeding an existing one takes about half.
Turn on starter fertilizer and it adds the bags to feed the new grass while the roots take hold. One bag covers roughly 5,000 square feet.
Sod & Seed Calculator questions
How much sod do I need?
Enter your area and the calculator returns rolls at about 10 square feet each, plus pallets for a bigger yard, with waste added and the counts rounded up.
How much grass seed per square foot?
It depends on the blend. Tall fescue and ryegrass seed heavier than bluegrass or bermuda. Pick your grass type and the calculator sets the rate and the pounds.
Should I sod or seed?
Sod gives an instant lawn and holds a slope right away. Seed costs less and suits a big open area you can water and wait on. The calculator prices out either one.
