Tiles, thinset, and grout in one pass
Order the tiles by square footage plus waste, not by the bare room size. Every row leaves a cut, and small tiles and busy patterns waste more.
Ten percent covers a straight lay. A diagonal wastes more, and a small mosaic or herringbone can eat 20 percent, so set the allowance to match the pattern.
Thinset and grout are the parts people forget at the counter. A 50 pound bag of thinset sets about 50 square feet of medium tile, and the trowel notch changes that. Grout depends on tile size and joint width, so the number here is a starting point. Confirm it on the bag and buy from one lot for a color match.

How much thinset and grout?
Roughly a 50 pound bag of thinset per 50 square feet of medium tile. Grout swings with tile size and joint width, so treat the number as a starting point and check the bag.
How much extra for a pattern?
