Project defaults

Set service, retainage, and class defaults for projects.

Project defaults decide how projects and pay applications post: the service item for progress billing lines, the account retainage is held in, and the class or location applied to new projects. Set them before you send your first pay application.

  1. Click your avatar in the top right, choose Account Settings, then click QuickBooks.
  2. Click Defaults, then Project Defaults.
  1. Pick the service item, retainage account and class new projects should sync with.

Good to know

  • Retainage posts to the account you pick here, so it stays off income until you bill it.
  • If you use classes or locations in QuickBooks for job costing, pick the default here and change it per project when needed.
  • Defaults only apply to records created after you set them.

Project defaults FAQ

I do not see my account in the list.

Click Sync Now on the QuickBooks page to pull the latest chart of accounts, then come back.

Can I change a default later?

Yes. Existing records keep their accounts; new ones use the new default.
